Complex geometries with long fibre reinforced polymer matrix composite structures are realised through adhesive bonding, with other composites or metals. However, they need to be disassembled during in-service or end-of-life phase. In the context of sustainability, greater attention in debonding technologies, tools and techniques is required for a better product life-cycle. This paper delineates the strategies, process steps and the important selection criteria in debonding of composite bonded joints. A critical review of different debonding technologies using mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, optical and their combination is conducted. Apart from journal references, this review includes patents and interesting test results from the in-house feasibility studies. Finally, a case study of debonding thick composite adhesive joints is implemented and the challenges pertaining on the reviewed techniques are addressed. This review can aid product designers to salvage highly-valued fibre reinforced polymeric composites, leaving benefits to society, economy and environment.
