Giant Brillouin amplification in gas using hollow-core waveguides

Abstract

We report a strong Brillouin amplification in gas using hollow-core fibers, exceeding by 6 times the gain in solid silica fibers. A novel fiber laser using Brillouin lasing in gas has been demonstrated.

Optical fiber

An optical fiber, or optical fibre in Commonwealth English, is a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair. Fiber nonlinearities, such as stimulated Raman scattering or four-wave mixing can also provide gain and thus serve as gain media for a fiber laser.
