Bipolar optical pulse coding for performance enhancement in BOTDA sensors

Abstract

A pump signal based on bipolar pulse coding and single-sideband suppressed-carried (SSB-SC) modulation is proposed for Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensors. Making a sequential use of the Brillouin gain and loss spectra, the technique is experimentally validated using bipolar complementary-correlation Golay codes along a 100 km-long fiber and 2 m spatial resolution, fully resolving a 2 m hot-spot at the end of the sensing fiber with no distortion introduced by the decoding algorithm. Experimental results, in good agreement with the theory, indicate that bipolar Golay codes provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio enhancement and stronger robustness to pump depletion in comparison to optimum unipolar pulse codes known for BOTDA sensing.

Line code

In telecommunication, a line code is a pattern of voltage, current, or photons used to represent digital data transmitted down a communication channel or written to a storage medium. Bipolar encoding

Such a signal is called a duobinary signal. Standard bipolar encodings are designed to be DC-balanced, spending equal amounts of time in the + and − states. The reason why bipolar encoding is classified as a return to zero (RZ) is that when a bipolar encoded channel is idle the line is held at a constant "zero" level, and when it is transmitting bits the line is either in a +V or -V state corresponding to the binary bit being transmitted.

Pulse-width modulation

Pulse-width modulation (PWM), or pulse-duration modulation (PDM), is a method of controlling the average power delivered by an electrical signal. The average value of voltage (and current) fed to the load is controlled by switching the supply between 0 and 100% at a rate faster than it takes the load to change significantly. The longer the switch is on, the higher the total power supplied to the load. Along with maximum power point tracking (MPPT), it is one of the primary methods of controlling the output of solar panels to that which can be utilized by a battery.
