Abstract

This paper is the basis for a course dedicated to the geomechanics modelling, taking into account multiphysics couplings. A number of different coupling are discussed, with respectively the fluid flow (saturated and unsaturated) and the thermal transfers in deformable porous media. Eventually some aspects on the numerical modelling with the finite element method are discussed.

Saturated and unsaturated compounds

A saturated compound is a chemical compound (or ion) that resists addition reactions, such as hydrogenation, oxidative addition, and binding of a Lewis base. The term is used in many contexts and for many classes of chemical compounds. Overall, saturated compounds are less reactive than unsaturated compounds. Saturation is derived from the Latin word saturare, meaning 'to fill'. Unsaturated compounds generally carry out typical addition reactions that are not possible with saturated compounds such as alkanes.

Incompressible flow

In fluid mechanics or more generally continuum mechanics, incompressible flow (isochoric flow) refers to a flow in which the material density is constant within a fluid parcel—an infinitesimal volume that moves with the flow velocity. An equivalent statement that implies incompressibility is that the divergence of the flow velocity is zero (see the derivation below, which illustrates why these conditions are equivalent). Incompressible flow does not imply that the fluid itself is incompressible.
