Abstract

Compliant vascular grafts for implantation in the vasculature are provided. The compliant vascular grafts are designed to expand longitudinally and radially within a blood vessel, such as an artery, and is expected to be particularly well suited for treating aneurysms in challenging anatomy such as the thoracic aorta. The compliant vascular grafts preferably have an outer frame layer and an inner graft layer with a plurality of pleats to permit expansion.

Aortic aneurysm

An aortic aneurysm is an enlargement (dilatation) of the aorta to greater than 1.5 times normal size. They usually cause no symptoms except when ruptured. Occasionally, there may be abdominal, back, or leg pain. The prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm ("AAA") has been reported to range from 2 to 12% and is found in about 8% of men more than 65 years of age. The mortality rate attributable to AAA is about 15,000 per year in the United States and 6,000 to 8,000 per year in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Intracranial aneurysm

An intracranial aneurysm, also known as a cerebral aneurysm, is a cerebrovascular disorder in which weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery or vein causes a localized dilation or ballooning of the blood vessel. Aneurysms in the posterior circulation (basilar artery, vertebral arteries and posterior communicating artery) have a higher risk of rupture. Basilar artery aneurysms represent only 3–5% of all intracranial aneurysms but are the most common aneurysms in the posterior circulation.
