Bedload transport continuity through a series of local widenings on the Rhone River

The Third Correction of the Rhone River in Switzerland will implement approximately 120 km of restoration measures to reduce flood risks and improve ecological conditions including a combination of river channel widening and river bed lowering. The river channel will morphologically evolve in time and in turn affect local bedload transport rates. This study explores parameters, processes and elements of the Third Correction that will need to be considered when estimating these co-evolving impacts to morphological development and bedload transport continuity for local river widenings. The goal is to better inform physical and numerical experiments used to improve future widening designs, including those on the Rhone.
