Two-dimensional Rashba metals: Unconventional low-temperature transport properties

Abstract

Rashba spin-orbit coupling emerges in materials lacking of structural inversion symmetry, such as heterostructures, quantum wells, surface alloys and polar materials, just to mention few examples. It yields a coupling between the spin and momentum of electrons formally identical to that arising from the weakly-relativistic limit of the Dirac equation. The purpose of the present work is to give an overview of the unconventional dc transport properties of two-dimensional metals with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, discussing in addition the effects of thermal broadening.

Angular momentum coupling

In quantum mechanics, the procedure of constructing eigenstates of total angular momentum out of eigenstates of separate angular momenta is called angular momentum coupling. For instance, the orbit and spin of a single particle can interact through spin–orbit interaction, in which case the complete physical picture must include spin–orbit coupling. Mainly, EDSR allows to flip the orientation of the magnetic moments through the use of electromagnetic radiation at resonant frequencies. EDSR was first proposed by Emmanuel Rashba. Computer hardware employs the electron charge in transistors to process information and the electron magnetic moment or spin for magnetic storage devices.
