Nanostructured tungsten-iron alloy prepared by electrodeposition

Abstract

Tungsten-iron alloy was produced by electrodeposition. The electrodeposited alloy (15 at.% W) possesses a two-phase composite microstructure, containing a nanocrystalline phase of distorted BCC structure with a grain size between 50 to 150 nm and an amorphous phase as the matrix. TEM in-situ annealing revealed that this composite structure was stable up to 650 degrees C. When tungsten content was doubled, the deposited alloy became amorphous.

Amorphous metal

An amorphous metal (also known as metallic glass, glassy metal, or shiny metal) is a solid metallic material, usually an alloy, with disordered atomic-scale structure. Most metals are crystalline in their solid state, which means they have a highly ordered arrangement of atoms. Amorphous metals are non-crystalline, and have a glass-like structure. But unlike common glasses, such as window glass, which are typically electrical insulators, amorphous metals have good electrical conductivity and can show metallic luster.

The secondary phase is typically a ceramic (such as alumina or silicon carbide) or another metal (such as steel). They are typically classified according to the type of reinforcement: short discontinuous fibers (whiskers), continuous fibers, or particulates. There is some overlap between MMCs and cermets, with the latter typically consisting of less than 20% metal by volume.
