Asymmetric Ring/Disk Nanocavities on Conducting Substrates for Strong Fano-Interference

Abstract

We introduce a Fano resonant asymmetric ring/disk cavity system employing a conducting layer underneath. Our system shows stronger electromagnetic fields that are highly accessible to surrounding medium and sharper spectral features that result in more reliable and sensitive biodetection platforms.

Electromagnetic spectrum

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of frequencies (the spectrum) of electromagnetic radiation and their respective wavelengths and photon energies. Electromagnetic radiation

Electromagnetic radiation and health

Electromagnetic radiation can be classified into two types: ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation, based on the capability of a single photon with more than 10 eV energy to ionize atoms or break chemical bonds. Extreme ultraviolet and higher frequencies, such as X-rays or gamma rays are ionizing, and these pose their own special hazards: see radiation poisoning. The most common health hazard of radiation is sunburn, which causes between approximately 100,000 and 1 million new skin cancers annually in the United States.
