Abstract

Stimulated Brillouin scattering makes possible the generation of synthesized gain spectra, so that innovative slow light schemes can be realized, ranging from broadband tunable delays to a zero-gain situation identical to an ideal electromagnetically-induced transparency.

Optical amplifier

An optical amplifier is a device that amplifies an optical signal directly, without the need to first convert it to an electrical signal. Modes are the possible solutions of the Helmholtz equation for waves, which is obtained by combining Maxwell's equations and the boundary conditions. These modes define the way the wave travels through space, i.e. how the wave is distributed in space. Waves can have the same mode but have different frequencies.
