Current Overshoots and Undershoots in Electrical Stimulation: A Circuit-level Perspective of the Origin and Solutions

Abstract

This paper investigates a common phenomenon in current mode stimulation which is known as current overshoots and undershoots. The origin of these abnormalities in the current pulses has remained an open issue and these overshoots and undershoots have been considered as unwanted phenomena during the stimulation. A circuit-level perspective of the origin of the current overshoots (and possible undershoots) is studied in this paper. Possible solutions to overcome these issues are also presented which are validated using a 0.18 mu m high-voltage CMOS technology.

It can be contrasted with cranial electrotherapy stimulation, which generally uses alternating current the same way, as well as transcranial magnetic stimulation. Research shows increasing evidence for tDCS as a treatment for depression.
