With 75,735 inhabitants in 2017, La Rochelle is the most populated commune in the department and ranks fifth in the New Aquitaine region after Bordeaux, the regional capital, Limoges, Poitiers and Pau. Its inhabitants are called "les Rochelaises" and "les Rochelais".

La BolducMary Rose-Anne Bolduc, born Travers, (June 4, 1894 – February 20, 1941) was a musician and singer of French Canadian music. She was known as Madame Bolduc or La Bolduc. During the peak of her popularity in the 1930s, she was known as the Queen of Canadian Folk Singers. Bolduc is often considered to be Quebec's first singer-songwriter. Her style combined the traditional folk music of Ireland and Quebec, usually in upbeat, comedic songs. Mary Rose Anna Travers "La Bolduc" was born in Newport, Quebec, in the Gaspé region.
François-Charles de VelbrückFrançois Charles de Velbrück (1719, Chateau de Garath, near Düsseldorf – 1784, Château de Hex, near Tongres) was a German ecclesiastic. He was prince bishop of Liege from 16 February 1772 to 1784. In 1735, Velbrück was made a prébende de chanoine-tréfoncier at the Cathédrale Saint-Lambert de Liège. A year later he was received onto the cathedral chapter by procuration. He was made archdeacon of Hesbaye, then officer of the Scel des Grâces in 1756. A year later he was put in charge of a diplomatic mission to the court at Vienna.
13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign LegionThe 13th Demi-Brigade of Foreign Legion (13e Demi-Brigade de Légion Étrangère, 13e DBLE), was created in 1940 and was the main unit of the 1st Free French Division, Free French Forces (FFL). From the coast of Norway to Bir Hakeim, to Africa then the Alsace, while passing by Syria and Italy, the 13th Demi-Brigade would be part of most of the major campaigns of the French Army during the Second World War. After having been engaged in Indochina from 1946 to 1954, the 13e DBLE joined the Algerian War, and left in 1962.

Károly Újfalvy von MezőkövesdKároly Jenő Ujfalvy de Mezőkövesd (16 May 1842 – 31 January 1904) was a noted Austro-Hungarian ethnographic researcher and linguist. of Central Asia and the Himalayas. Also known as Charles de Ujfalvy in his adopted France, Ujfalvy traveled to Samarkand and Bokhara and led an expedition to the Kashmir in 1880. He was born at Székelykövesd/Cuieşd, in Transylvania, and died at Florence. Ujfalvy also published under the following names: Mezőkövesdi Ujfalvy Károly Jenő, or Karl Eugen Ujfalvy von Mezőkövesd, Charles-Eugène Ujfalvy de Mezökövesd, or Mező-Kövesd.

La VieilleLa Vieille ("The Old Lady" or "The Wrass") is a lighthouse in the département of Finistère at the commune of Plogoff, on the northwest coast of France. It lies on the rock known as Gorlebella (Breton for "farthest rock"), guiding mariners in the strait Raz de Sein, across from the companion lighthouse Tourelle de la Plate—also known as Petite Vieille ("Little Old Woman"). It is among the small class of lighthouses around the coasts of France carrying the moniker "hell", due to a remote position in rough seas.
