Roberto CastelloRoberto Castello is a senior scientist and group leader at the EPFL Laboratory of Solar Energy and Building Physics. Physicist by training, he has extensive experience in collecting, classifying and interpreting large datasets using advanced data mining techniques and statistical methods. He received his MSc (2007) in Particle Physics and PhD (2010) in Physics and Astrophysics from the University of Torino. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Belgian National Research Fund (2011-2014) and at the CERN Experimental Physics Department (2015-2017) as a research fellow and data scientist. He is primary author of more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and he presented at major international conferences in the high energy physics domain.
In 2018 he joined the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory (LESO-PB) to work on data mining and Machine Learning techniques for the built environment and renewable energy. His main research interests are: spatio-temporal modeling of renewable energy potential, energy consumption forecasting techniques, anomaly detection, and computer vision techniques for automated classification in the built environment.
He leads the group of Urban Data Mining, Intelligence and Simulation at LESO-PB and he is a member of the NRP75 Big Data project (HyEnergy) of the Swiss National Science Foundation. He is a member of the Swiss Competence Centre for Energy Research (SCCER) and deputy leader of the working group on Leveraging Ubiquitous Energy Data. He has served as a scientific committee member, workshop organizer and speaker at international conferences (ICAE 2020, Applied Machine Learning Days 2019 and 2020, CISBAT 2019 and 2021 and SDS2020).
Since 2017 he is member of the Geneva 2030 Ecosystem network, promoting the United Nations agenda towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Robert WestRobert West is a tenure-track assistant professor of computer science at EPFL, where he heads the Data Science Lab. In his research, he develops and applies techniques in machine learning, computational social science, natural language processing, social network analysis, and data mining. Bob also collaborates closely with the Wikimedia Foundation, in his role as a Wikimedia Research Fellow. Bob’s work has won several awards, including best/outstanding paper awards at ICWSM’21, ICWSM’19, and WWW’13, a best-paper runner-up award at WWW’16, a Google Faculty Research Award, a Facebook Research Award, a Hewlett-Packard Graduate Fellowship, and a Facebook Graduate Fellowship. He is actively involved in the research community, e.g., as an Associate Editor of ICWSM and EPJ Data Science and as a co-founder of the Wiki Workshop (held at WWW and ICWSM) and the Applied Machine Learning Days. Manoel Horta RibeiroI'm a first year PhD student at EPFL🇨🇭 working at dlab with Bob West. I'm also a member of iDrama🎭. My research focuses on the dynamics of content creation and consumption in Social Networks and Fringe Communities I received my B.S./M.S. in Computer Science from UFMG🇧🇷, where I worked with Wagner Meira Jr. and Virgílio Almeida.
The research I've been involved with has been published in venues such as: the Web Conference (WWW), the AAAI International Conf. on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM), the ACM Conf. on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAccT), and Nature Communications. Also, it has received substantial media attention, getting covered by WIRED, MIT Tech Review, NBC, and others.
Marc LaperrouzaMarc est collaborateur scientifique et chargé de cours à lEPFL et à HEC Lausanne. Marc a obtenu un doctorat à la London School of Economics (réforme du secteur des télécommunications en Chine), une maîtrise en gestion internationale (HEC, 1997) et une licence en gestion à HEC Lausanne (1993). Il a étudié le Mandarin et l'économie à Fudan University, Shanghai (1993-1995) et a passé un semestre à la Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, Canada (1996). Avant de rejoindre le Collège des Humanités, Marc a travaillé à l'EPFL sur les industries de réseaux (CDM, 2007-2011). Il a été directeur adjoint et conseiller spécial du Evian Group, un institut de recherche rattaché à IMD. Il a en outre travaillé pour la division Asie de Swiss Re et pour le McKinsey Business Technology Office. Il intervient de manière ponctuelle au niveau Bachelor, Master ou Executive dans les universités romandes. Marc est invité de manière régulière dans les médias suisses (RTS Radio et TV, Le Temps). Il est le fondateur et président de l'association bonopro. Il s'est vu décerner le Swiss Re Milizpreis 2011.
Kamiar AminianKamiar Aminian received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1982, the Ph.D degree in biomedical engineering in 1989 and the Postgraduate degree on technical computing in 1993 from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He was assistant professor (1994-1996) with Sharif University of Technology (Tehran). He joint EPFL in 1996 where he is currently Professor of medical instrumentation and the director of the Laboratory of Movement Analysis and Measurement in the Institute of Bioengineering of EPFL. His research interests include methodologies for human movement monitoring and analysis in real world conditions mainly based on wearable technologies and inertial sensors with emphasis on gait, physical activity and sport. His research aims to perform outcome evaluation in orthopaedics, to improve motor function and intervention programs in aging and patients with movement disorders and pain, and to identify metrics of performance in sport science.
Kamiar Aminian is a member of the International Society of Posture and Gait Research, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the European Society of Movement Analysis in Adults and Children, the Prevention of fall Network Europe, the Intentional Society of Biomechanics and the President of the 3D analysis of the human movement group. He is author or co-author of more than 450 scientific papers published in reviewed journals and presented at international conferences and holds 10 patents related to medical devices.
