Résumé

Weber et al. provide evidence in support of a stress-diathesis model of functional neurological disorders. They identify trauma history in the form of emotional neglect as a psychological risk factor, and reduced hippocampus and amygdala volume as a predisposing biological trait marker.

Hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis

The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA axis or HTPA axis) is a complex set of direct influences and feedback interactions among three components: the hypothalamus (a part of the brain located below the thalamus), the pituitary gland (a pea-shaped structure located below the hypothalamus), and the adrenal (also called "suprarenal") glands (small, conical organs on top of the kidneys). These organs and their interactions constitute the HPA axis.

Glande surrénale

Chez les mammifères et les oiseaux, les (ou plus simplement les surrénales) ou glandes suprarénales sont deux glandes endocrines paires mais non symétriques, pyramidale à droite, en goutte à gauche, situées au-dessus des reins, dans le rétropéritoine. Elles sont principalement responsables de la gestion des situations de stress (via la synthèse de corticoïdes et de catécholamines) et de l'homéostasie hydro-sodée (via la synthèse de l'aldostérone).

Axe gonadotrope

The hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis (HPG axis, also known as the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian/testicular axis) refers to the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and gonadal glands as if these individual endocrine glands were a single entity. Because these glands often act in concert, physiologists and endocrinologists find it convenient and descriptive to speak of them as a single system. The HPG axis plays a critical part in the development and regulation of a number of the body's systems, such as the reproductive and immune systems.
