A Distributed Algorithm for Computing the Node Search Number in Trees

Résumé

We present a distributed algorithm to compute the node search number in trees. This algorithm extends the centralized algorithm proposed by Ellis et al. (Inf. Comput. 113(1):50-79, 1994). It can be executed in an asynchronous environment, requires an overall computation time of O(nlog n), and n messages of log (3) n+4 bits each.

Computing

Computing is any goal-oriented activity requiring, benefiting from, or creating computing machinery. It includes the study and experimentation of algorithmic processes, and development of both hardware and software. Computation

The notion that mathematical statements should be ‘well-defined’ had been argued by mathematicians since at least the 1600s, but agreement on a suitable definition proved elusive.

Theory of computation

In theoretical computer science and mathematics, the theory of computation is the branch that deals with what problems can be solved on a model of computation, using an algorithm, how efficiently they can be solved or to what degree (e.g., approximate solutions versus precise ones). The field is divided into three major branches: automata theory and formal languages, computability theory, and computational complexity theory, which are linked by the question: "What are the fundamental capabilities and limitations of computers?".
