Shedding light on the optical properties of spider silk fiber

Résumé

Optical characterisation of a Nephila edulis spider dragline silk is performed. The silk fiber transmits light up to 1400 nm with a propagation loss of ∼9 dB/cm and birefringence of 8×10−3 measured at 1302 nm.

Soie d'araignée

Les araignées utilisent notamment leur soie pour capturer leurs proies, fabriquer des toiles ou des cocons pour protéger leur progéniture ou conserver leurs proies. Fiber

Fiber or fibre (British English; from fibra) is a natural or artificial substance that is significantly longer than it is wide. Fibers are often used in the manufacture of other materials. The strongest engineering materials often incorporate fibers, for example carbon fiber and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. Synthetic fibers can often be produced very cheaply and in large amounts compared to natural fibers, but for clothing natural fibers can give some benefits, such as comfort, over their synthetic counterparts.

Soie

Les protéines de soie sont de longues macromolécules structurelles composées d'acides aminés (principalement l'alanine, la glycine et la sérine) dont la répétition donne naissance à une fibre hydrophobe. De nombreux arthropodes produisent de la soie dans des glandes séricigènes, notamment les araignées (soie d'araignée) et les chenilles de certains papillons (Yponomeutes, bombyx).
