Résumé

Nanoparticles on an atomic carpet: Individual graphene sheets have been decorated with metal nanoparticles through electrochemistry. The attachment of Pd particles onto graphene renders it sensitive to hydrogen. The controlled functionalization of graphene paves the way for various electronic applications.

Graphène

Le graphène est un matériau bidimensionnel cristallin, forme allotropique du carbone dont l'empilement constitue le graphite. Cette définition théorique est donnée par le physicien en 1947. Par la suite, le travail de différents groupes de recherche permettra de se rendre compte que la structure du graphène tout comme ses propriétés ne sont pas uniques et dépendent de sa synthèse/extraction (détaillée dans la section Production).

Nanoparticule

Une nanoparticule est selon la norme ISO TS/27687 un nano-objet dont les trois dimensions sont à l'échelle nanométrique, c'est-à-dire une particule dont le diamètre nominal est inférieur à environ. D'autres définitions évoquent un assemblage d'atomes dont au moins une des dimensions se situe à l'échelle nanométrique (ce qui correspond au « nano-objet » tel que défini par la norme ISO précitée) ou insistent sur leurs propriétés nouvelles (dues au confinement quantique et à leur surface spécifique) qui n'apparaissent que pour des tailles de moins d'une centaine de nanomètres.
