Progress on the upgrade of the TCV EC-system with two 1MW dual-frequency gyrotrons

Résumé

The upgrade of the electron cyclotron (EC) system of the TCV tokamak has entered in its realization phase. The MW-class dual-frequency gyrotron design (84 or 126GHz/2s), based on the 140GHz W7-X gyrotron, is finalized and a contract for the manufacturing of two units has been placed with Thales Electron Devices (TED). For maintaining a high level of operational flexibility of the EC-system the integration of the dual-frequency gyrotrons adds a significant complexity in the evacuated HE11 transmission line system connected to the various TCV low-field side and top launchers. Specific aspects of the gyrotrons design and their integration into the EC-system are described. The EC-system upgrade is an essential step of a larger extent upgrade of TCV.

Tokamak

Un tokamak est un dispositif de confinement magnétique expérimental explorant la physique des plasmas et les possibilités de produire de l'énergie par fusion nucléaire. Il existe deux types de tokamaks aux caractéristiques sensiblement différentes, les tokamaks traditionnels toriques (objet de cet article) et les tokamaks sphériques.

Gyrotron

A gyrotron is a class of high-power linear-beam vacuum tubes that generates millimeter-wave electromagnetic waves by the cyclotron resonance of electrons in a strong magnetic field. Output frequencies range from about 20 to 527 GHz, covering wavelengths from microwave to the edge of the terahertz gap. Typical output powers range from tens of kilowatts to 1–2 megawatts. Gyrotrons can be designed for pulsed or continuous operation. The gyrotron was invented by Soviet scientists at NIRFI, based in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

Fusion par confinement magnétique

La fusion par confinement magnétique (FCM) est une méthode de confinement utilisée pour porter une quantité de combustible aux conditions de température et de pression désirées pour la fusion nucléaire. De puissants champs électromagnétiques sont employés pour atteindre ces conditions. Le combustible doit au préalable être converti en plasma, celui-ci se laisse ensuite influencer par les champs magnétiques. Il s'agit de la méthode utilisée dans les tokamaks toriques et sphériques, les stellarators et les machines à piège à miroirs magnétiques.
