The DESI fiber positioner system

Résumé

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is under construction to measure the expansion history of the Universe using the baryon acoustic oscillation technique. A new prime focus corrector for the KPNO Mayall telescope will deliver light to 5,000 fiber optic positioners feeding ten broad-band spectrographs. The positioners have eccentric axis kinematics. Actuation is provided by two 4 mm diameter DC brushless gear-motors. An attached electronics board accepts a DC voltage for power and CAN messages for communications and drives the two motors. The positioner accepts the ferrulized and polished fiber and provides a mechanically safe path through its internal mechanism. Positioning is rapid and accurate with typical RMS errors of less than 5 mu m.

Oscillations acoustiques des baryons

En cosmologie, l'étude du fond diffus cosmologique a révélé que des ondes acoustiques se propageaient dans le plasma primordial — constitué d'un mélange opaque de baryons et de photons — qui précédait la recombinaison. Ces oscillations acoustiques des baryons (en anglais, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations ou BAO) ont laissé des empreintes dans la structure de l'univers à grande échelle, sur des distances de l'ordre de 100 à 150 Mpc/h.

Expansion de l'Univers

En cosmologie, l'expansion de l'Univers est le nom du phénomène qui voit à grande échelle les objets composant l'Univers (galaxies, amas...) s'éloigner les uns des autres. Cet écartement mutuel, que l'on pourrait prendre pour un mouvement des galaxies dans l'espace, s'interprète en réalité par un gonflement, une dilatation, de l'espace lui-même, les objets célestes étant de ce fait amenés à s'éloigner les uns des autres.

Énergie noire
