On Mining Citations to Primary and Secondary Sources in Historiography

Résumé

We present preliminary results from the Linked Books project, which aims at analysing citations from the histo- riography on Venice. A preliminary goal is to extract and parse citations from any location in the text, especially footnotes, both to primary and secondary sources. We detail a pipeline for these tasks based on a set of classifiers, and test it on the Archivio Veneto, a journal in the domain.

Primary source

In the study of history as an academic discipline, a primary source (also called an original source) is an artifact, document, diary, manuscript, autobiography, recording, or any other source of information that was created at the time under study. It serves as an original source of information about the topic. Similar definitions can be used in library science and other areas of scholarship, although different fields have somewhat different definitions.

Théorie des ensembles

La théorie des ensembles est une branche des mathématiques, créée par le mathématicien allemand Georg Cantor à la fin du . La théorie des ensembles se donne comme primitives les notions d'ensemble et d'appartenance, à partir desquelles elle reconstruit les objets usuels des mathématiques : fonctions, relations, entiers naturels, relatifs, rationnels, nombres réels, complexes... C'est pourquoi la théorie des ensembles est considérée comme une théorie fondamentale dont Hilbert a pu dire qu'elle était un « paradis » créé par Cantor pour les mathématiciens.
