Protéine tau

La protéine tau (en tubulin-associated unit) est une protéine animale. Elle fait partie de la famille des protéines associées aux microtubules (protéines MAP). Chez les humains, ces protéines sont surtout présentes dans les neurones par rapport aux cellules non neuronales du système nerveux central. Une des principales fonctions des protéines tau est d'interagir avec la tubuline afin de moduler la stabilité des microtubules des axones.

Enchevêtrement neurofibrillaire

Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau protein that are most commonly known as a primary biomarker of Alzheimer's disease. Their presence is also found in numerous other diseases known as tauopathies. Little is known about their exact relationship to the different pathologies. Neurofibrillary tangles are formed by hyperphosphorylation of a microtubule-associated protein known as tau, causing it to aggregate, or group, in an insoluble form.

Protein phosphorylation

Protein phosphorylation is a reversible post-translational modification of proteins in which an amino acid residue is phosphorylated by a protein kinase by the addition of a covalently bound phosphate group. Phosphorylation alters the structural conformation of a protein, causing it to become either activated or deactivated, or otherwise modifying its function. Approximately 13000 human proteins have sites that are phosphorylated. The reverse reaction of phosphorylation is called dephosphorylation, and is catalyzed by protein phosphatases.
