IceTop: The surface component of IceCube

Résumé

IceTop, the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, is an air shower array with an area of 1 km(2). The detector allows a detailed exploration of the mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range from about 100 TeV to 1 EeV by exploiting the correlation between the shower energy measured in IceTop and the energy deposited by muons in the deep ice. In this paper we report on the technical design, construction and installation, the trigger and data acquisition systems as well as the software framework for calibration, reconstruction and simulation. Finally the first experience from commissioning and operating the detector and the performance as an air shower detector will be discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Gerbe atmosphérique

Une gerbe atmosphérique (en anglais, extensive air shower) est une cascade de particules créée par l'interaction d'un rayon cosmique avec l'atmosphère. Cette interaction crée des particules secondaires, qui interagissent elles-mêmes avec l'atmosphère, créant ainsi d'autres particules, etc., jusqu'à ce que l'énergie des particules ne soit plus suffisante pour créer de nouvelles particules. On distingue les gerbes électromagnétiques, constituées de leptons et de photons, des gerbes hadroniques, qui contiennent également des hadrons.

Rayonnement cosmique

Le rayonnement cosmique est le flux de noyaux atomiques et de particules de haute énergie (c'est-à-dire relativistes) qui circulent dans le milieu interstellaire. Le rayonnement cosmique est principalement constitué de particules chargées : protons (88 %), noyaux d'hélium (9 %), antiprotons, électrons, positrons et particules neutres (rayons gamma, neutrinos et neutrons). La source de ce rayonnement se situe selon les cas dans le Soleil, à l'intérieur ou à l'extérieur de notre galaxie.

Muon

Le muon est, selon le modèle standard de la physique des particules, une particule élémentaire de charge électrique négative, instable. Le muon a pour spin 1/2 et a les mêmes propriétés physiques que l'électron, mis à part sa masse, 207 fois plus grande (, c'est pour cela qu'on l'appelle parfois « électron lourd »). Les muons sont des fermions de la famille des leptons, comme les électrons et les taus. Les muons sont notés μ−. L'antimuon, l'antiparticule associée au muon, est notée μ+ et est chargée positivement.
