A sensory information compliant spinal cord stimulation system for the rehabilitation of motor functions

Résumé

The present invention refers to a system for stimulation of the spinal cord for the rehabilitation of motor function in subjects with spinal cord injury or other motor disorders. Said system comprises a programmable implantable pulse generator (IPG), operatively connected to deliver current pulses to one or more multi-electrode arrays, wherein said IPG is adapted to deliver to said multi-electrode array a stimulation characterized by a frequency comprised between 20 and 1200 Hz and an amplitude comprised between 0.1 motor threshold amplitude and 1.5 motor threshold amplitude. The use of such system for facilitating locomotor functions or upper limb movements in a subject with neuromotor impairments is also within the scope of the invention.

Spinal cord stimulator

A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) or dorsal column stimulator (DCS) is a type of implantable neuromodulation device (sometimes called a "pain pacemaker") that is used to send electrical signals to select areas of the spinal cord (dorsal columns) for the treatment of certain pain conditions. SCS is a consideration for people who have a pain condition that has not responded to more conservative therapy. There are also spinal cord stimulators under research and development that could enable patients with spinal cord injury to walk again via epidural electrical stimulation (EES).

Traumatisme médullaire

Un traumatisme médullaire ou traumatisme de la moelle épinière (ou moelle spinale) met en jeu le pronostic vital immédiat ou retardé. Contrôle moteur

En neurosciences, le contrôle moteur est la capacité de faire des ajustements posturaux dynamiques et de diriger le corps et les membres dans le but de faire un mouvement déterminé. Le mouvement volontaire est initié par le cortex moteur primaire et le cortex prémoteur. Le signal est ensuite transmis aux circuits du tronc cérébral et de la moelle épinière qui activent les muscles squelettiques qui, en se contractant, produisent un mouvement. Le mouvement produit renvoie des informations proprioceptives au système nerveux central (SNC).
