Spatio-temporal filtering for EEG error related potentials

Résumé

This paper presents a new filter for EEG Event-Related Potentials that relies on spatio-temporal features. The results are analyzed with error-related potentials, and compared to the results obtained with Independent Component Analysis. Additionally, the obtained features are used for single-trial classification, showing that it is possible to obtain high classification accuracies with a very low number of features.

Event-related potential

An event-related potential (ERP) is the measured brain response that is the direct result of a specific sensory, cognitive, or motor event. More formally, it is any stereotyped electrophysiological response to a stimulus. The study of the brain in this way provides a noninvasive means of evaluating brain functioning. ERPs are measured by means of electroencephalography (EEG). The magnetoencephalography (MEG) equivalent of ERP is the ERF, or event-related field. Evoked potentials and induced potentials are subtypes of ERPs.

Un potentiel évoqué (PE, dit aussi ERP pour l'anglais Event-Related Potential) désigne la modification du potentiel électrique produite par le système nerveux en réponse à une stimulation externe, notamment sensorielle (un son, une image, etc.) mais aussi à un événement interne, notamment une activité cognitive (attention, préparation motrice, etc.) et enregistré grâce à des techniques comme l'électroencéphalographie (EEG) ou la magnétoencéphalographie (MEG).

Bereitschaftspotential

In neurology, the Bereitschaftspotential or BP (German for "readiness potential"), also called the pre-motor potential or readiness potential (RP), is a measure of activity in the motor cortex and supplementary motor area of the brain leading up to voluntary muscle movement. The BP is a manifestation of cortical contribution to the pre-motor planning of volitional movement. It was first recorded and reported in 1964 by Hans Helmut Kornhuber and Lüder Deecke at the University of Freiburg in Germany.
