Getting in touch with text: Designing a mobile phone application for illiterate users to harness SMS

Résumé

A large number of illiterate people - 800 million worldwide - are currently excluded from the benefits of asynchronous and cheap communication through text messages also known as SMS. Smart phones with touch screen will soon be in financial reach of illiterate people in developing countries. Our application EasyTexting allows illiterate users to listen to received SMS and compose text messages by augmenting words with touch-initiated text-to-speech support, icons for frequent phrases and by re-using words from previous messages. The application sends and receives plain SMS and makes no assumption on second parties' SMS editors. We present the motivation for this application derived from interviews and the evolution of the design along with an exploratory evaluation of the interface both with illiterate immigrants. © 2012 ACM.

Messagerie texte

La messagerie texte, ou texto, est l'acte de composer et d'envoyer des messages électroniques, généralement composés de caractères alphabétiques et numériques, entre deux ou plusieurs utilisateurs de dispositifs mobiles, d'ordinateurs de bureau/portables ou d'autres types d'ordinateurs compatibles. Short Message Service

Le service de messagerie SMS, plus connu sous le sigle de SMS (pour « Short Message Service ») ou les noms de « texto » ou de « minimessage », permet de transmettre de courts messages textuels. C'est l'un des services de la téléphonie mobile (il a été introduit par la norme GSM). Dans certaines régions du monde comme l’Amérique du Nord, le Royaume-Uni ou les Philippines, on parle de « messagerie texte ».

Messagerie instantanée

La messagerie instantanée (MI) permet l’échange instantané de messages textuels et de fichiers entre plusieurs personnes par l'intermédiaire d’ordinateurs, de tablettes ou de téléphones mobiles connectés à un même réseau informatique, plus communément à Internet. Contrairement au courrier électronique, ce moyen de communication permet de conduire un dialogue interactif. La messagerie instantanée est souvent désignée sous le nom « chat » (/tʃæt/ du verbe anglais to chat , le plus souvent prononcé /tʃat/ en France).
