Droplet extraction module for the analysis of segmented flow generated by a neural probe

Résumé

We recently developed a neural probe allowing to capture at high temporal resolution nano-volume droplets of interstitial fluid from the brain organized in a segmented flow. In order to enable the analysis of these small volume and low concentration droplets, a PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) extraction mod- ule was designed and fabricated using microfabrication technology. Extraction efficiency was evaluated by injecting an artificially created droplets train separated by oily phases in the PDMS module and analyzing the proportion of droplets successfully removed. Results demonstrate 97% of removal effi- ciency as well as compatibility with a large range of flow rates.

Neuroprosthetics

Neuroprosthetics (also called neural prosthetics) is a discipline related to neuroscience and biomedical engineering concerned with developing neural prostheses. They are sometimes contrasted with a brain–computer interface, which connects the brain to a computer rather than a device meant to replace missing biological functionality. Neural prostheses are a series of devices that can substitute a motor, sensory or cognitive modality that might have been damaged as a result of an injury or a disease.

Plaque neurale

The neural plate is a key developmental structure that serves as the basis for the nervous system. Cranial to the primitive node of the embryonic primitive streak, ectodermal tissue thickens and flattens to become the neural plate. The region anterior to the primitive node can be generally referred to as the neural plate. Cells take on a columnar appearance in the process as they continue to lengthen and narrow. The ends of the neural plate, known as the neural folds, push the ends of the plate up and together, folding into the neural tube, a structure critical to brain and spinal cord development.
