Magnesium plasmonics for UV applications and chiral sensing

Résumé

We demonstrate that chiral magnesium nanoparticles show remarkable plasmonic extinction- and chiroptical-effects in the ultraviolet region. The Mg nanohelices possess an enhanced local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensitivity due to the strong dispersion of most substances in the UV region.

Chiralité (chimie)

Le concept de la chiralité existe également dans d'autres domaines. En chimie, un composé est dit chiral (du grec χείρ : la main) s'il n'est pas superposable à son image dans un miroir plan. Il existe un certain nombre de raisons pour lesquelles une molécule peut être chirale : la présence d'un ou plusieurs centres asymétriques (sauf certaines conditions particulières de symétrie) ; une forme en hélice ; un plan de chiralité. Énantiomérie Si une molécule est chirale, elle possède au moins deux formes dites énantiomères qui se différencient par une configuration absolue opposée.

Chiral media

The term chiral ˈkaɪrəl describes an object, especially a molecule, which has or produces a non-superposable mirror image of itself. In chemistry, such a molecule is called an enantiomer or is said to exhibit chirality or enantiomerism. The term "chiral" comes from the Greek word for the human hand, which itself exhibits such non-superimposeability of the left hand precisely over the right. Due to the opposition of the fingers and thumbs, no matter how the two hands are oriented, it is impossible for both hands to exactly coincide.

La chiralité (du grec χείρ, kheir : main) est une importante propriété reliant les notions de symétrie et d'orientation, intervenant dans diverses branches de la science. Un objet ou un système est appelé chiral s’il n'est pas superposable à son image dans un miroir. Cet objet et son image miroir constituent alors deux formes différentes qualifiées d'énantiomorphes (du grec formes opposées) ou, en se référant à des molécules, des conformations spatiales « gauches » et « droites » appelées énantiomères dotés d'une asymétrie moléculaire tridimensionnelle.
