The journey of resveratrol from yeast to human

Résumé

The natural polyphenolic compound resveratrol was first discovered in the 1940s. In the recent years, this compound received renewed interest as several findings implicated resveratrol as a potent SIRT1 activator capable of mimicking the effects of calorie restriction, and regulating longevity in lower organisms. Given the worldwide increase in age-related metabolic diseases the beneficial effects of resveratrol on metabolism and healthy aging in humans are currently a topic of intense investigation.

Aging brain

Aging of the brain is a process of transformation of the brain in older age, including changes all individuals experience and those of illness (including unrecognised illness). Usually this refers to humans. Since life extension is only pertinent if accompanied by health span extension, and, more importantly, by preserving brain health and cognition, finding rejuvenating approaches that act simultaneously in peripheral tissues and in brain function is a key strategy for development of rejuvenating technology.

Restriction calorique

La restriction calorique ou régime hypocalorique est un type de régime amaigrissant consistant à réduire les apports caloriques habituellement ingérés, tout en se nourrissant de manière suffisante au niveau qualitatif, de sorte qu'il se passe une sous-nutrition sans atteindre le stade de la malnutrition. L'un des plus connus est notamment celui mis en place par le très médiatisé médecin nutritionniste, Jean-Michel Cohen. Le fondement de son régime hypocalorique est une alimentation variée et équilibrée.

Longévité

La longévité potentielle d'un être vivant est la durée de vie pour laquelle il est programmé en tant qu'espèce biologique. Certains records de longévité atteints par des individus ayant bénéficié d'une durée de vie exceptionnellement longue peuvent même dépasser cette évaluation. La longévité moyenne correspond à l'espérance de vie, notion très variable selon les populations et les générations concernées au sein d'une même espèce. Par exemple, la longévité potentielle d'un chat (Felis silvestris catus) est estimée à 20 ans.
