Analogy between Sustained Loading and Strain Rate Effects on the Nonlinear Creep Response of Concrete

Résumé

This paper investigates the uniaxial compression behaviour of concrete under different strain rates and its relation to sustained loading. The aim is to observe the strain rate effect on the pre- and post-peak behaviour of concrete. In particular, the development of nonlinear creep strains for different strain rates has been investigated and compared to the sustained load behaviour. The development of creep strains is in accordance with the progress of cracking as observed by acoustic emissions. An analogy is found between the concrete compression behaviour under various strain rates and the concrete compression behaviour under sustained loads at different stress levels.

Prelog strain

In organic chemistry, transannular strain (also called Prelog strain after chemist Vladimir Prelog) is the unfavorable interactions of ring substituents on non-adjacent carbons. These interactions, called transannular interactions, arise from a lack of space in the interior of the ring, which forces substituents into conflict with one another. In medium-sized cycloalkanes, which have between 8 and 11 carbons constituting the ring, transannular strain can be a major source of the overall strain, especially in some conformations, to which there is also contribution from large-angle strain and Pitzer strain.

Strain (chemistry)

In chemistry, a molecule experiences strain when its chemical structure undergoes some stress which raises its internal energy in comparison to a strain-free reference compound. The internal energy of a molecule consists of all the energy stored within it. A strained molecule has an additional amount of internal energy which an unstrained molecule does not. This extra internal energy, or strain energy, can be likened to a compressed spring.

La viscoélasticité est la propriété de matériaux qui présentent des caractéristiques à la fois visqueuses et élastiques, lorsqu'ils subissent une déformation. Les matériaux visqueux, comme le miel, résistent bien à un écoulement en cisaillement et présentent une déformation qui augmente linéairement avec le temps lorsqu'une contrainte est appliquée. Les matériaux élastiques se déforment lorsqu'ils sont contraints, et retournent rapidement à leur état d'origine une fois la contrainte retirée.
