Measuring Gaze of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Naturalistic Interactions

Résumé

In this paper, we report on a study on gaze behavior by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during a dyadic interaction in a naturalistic environment. Twelve children with ASD were contrasted to twelve typically developing (TD) children, in a semi-structured interaction with a selection of items from the Early Social Communication Scale (ESCS). We used the WearCam, a novel head-mounted eye-tracker designed for children, to obtain gaze information across the broad field of view from the viewpoint of the child. Children with ASD looked downwards more often, and explored their lateral field of view more extensively compared to TD children. We discuss a number of hypotheses in support of these observations.

Trouble du spectre de l'autisme

Un trouble du spectre de l'autisme (anciennement trouble du spectre autistique) ou TSA (en autism spectrum disorder ou ASD) est un diagnostic de l'autisme depuis 2013, dans la du Manuel diagnostique et statistique de l'Association américaine de psychiatrie (DSM-5). Les éditions antérieures du DSM, et la de la Classification internationale des maladies de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (CIM-10), utilisent la dénomination troubles envahissants du développement (ou TED).

Oculométrie

L’oculométrie (en anglais pour « suivi oculaire », ou pour « suivi du regard ») regroupe un ensemble de techniques permettant d'enregistrer les mouvements oculaires. Les oculomètres les plus courants analysent des images de l'œil humain enregistrées par une caméra, souvent en lumière infrarouge, pour calculer la direction du regard du sujet. En fonction de la précision souhaitée, différentes caractéristiques de l'œil sont analysées.

Spectrum disorder

A spectrum disorder is a mental disorder that includes a range of linked conditions, sometimes also extending to include singular symptoms and traits. The different elements of a spectrum either have a similar appearance or are thought to be caused by the same underlying mechanism. In either case, a spectrum approach is taken because there appears to be "not a unitary disorder but rather a syndrome composed of subgroups". The spectrum may represent a range of severity, comprising relatively "severe" mental disorders through to relatively "mild and nonclinical deficits".
