Minigap in a SN junction with paramagnetic impurities

Résumé

We study the effect of spin-flip scattering on the density of states in a long diffusive S-N junction with transparent interface. We calculate the critical value of the spin-flip scattering rate at which the minigap closes and give the dependence of the minigap on the spin-flip rate. For the system we consider, the minigap and the critical spin-flip rate have the scale of the Thouless energy, and not of the superconducting gap.

Supraconductivité

La supraconductivité, ou supraconduction, est un phénomène physique caractérisé par l'absence de résistance électrique et l'expulsion du champ magnétique — l'effet Meissner — à l'intérieur de certains matériaux dits supraconducteurs. La supraconductivité découverte historiquement en premier, et que l'on nomme communément supraconductivité conventionnelle, se manifeste à des températures très basses, proches du zéro absolu (). Energy gap

In solid-state physics, an energy gap or band gap is an energy range in a solid where no electron states exist, i.e. an energy range where the density of states vanishes. Especially in condensed-matter physics, an energy gap is often known more abstractly as a spectral gap, a term which need not be specific to electrons or solids. If an energy gap exists in the band structure of a material, it is called band gap.

Spin echo

In magnetic resonance, a spin echo or Hahn echo is the refocusing of spin magnetisation by a pulse of resonant electromagnetic radiation. Modern nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) make use of this effect. The NMR signal observed following an initial excitation pulse decays with time due to both spin relaxation and any inhomogeneous effects which cause spins in the sample to precess at different rates. The first of these, relaxation, leads to an irreversible loss of magnetisation.
