Imaging of renal and prostate carcinoma with refractive index radiology

Résumé

Having better edge enhancement and penetrating power, refractive index radiology is suitable for the imaging of weakly absorbing objects such as tissue specimens. In this study the potential of refractive index radiology was evaluated for the imaging of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and prostate cancer (PCA).

Cancer de la prostate

vignette|Prostate et vésicules séminales (normales) Le cancer de la prostate est un cancer fréquent touchant la prostate, une glande de l'appareil reproducteur de l'homme. Le cancer se développe à partir des tissus de la prostate quand des cellules y mutent et se multiplient de façon incontrôlée. Celles-ci peuvent ensuite s'étendre (se métastaser) en migrant de la prostate jusqu'à d'autres parties du corps, particulièrement les os et les ganglions lymphatiques du pelvis.

Carcinome

Un carcinome (du καρκίνωμα, karkinôma, tumeur cancereuse) ou épithélioma est un cancer développé à partir d'un tissu épithélial (peau, muqueuse). Selon le type d'épithélium on distingue : les carcinomes épidermoïdes ou carcinomes malpighiens, développés aux dépens d'un épithélium malpighien ; les adénocarcinomes, développés aux dépens d'un épithélium glandulaire ; les carcinomes anaplasiques, indifférenciés, embryonnaires Les deux principaux types de cancers de la peau sont les carcinomes (96 % des cas) et les mélanomes (4 % des cas).

Renal cell carcinoma

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a kidney cancer that originates in the lining of the proximal convoluted tubule, a part of the very small tubes in the kidney that transport primary urine. RCC is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults, responsible for approximately 90–95% of cases. RCC occurrence shows a male predominance over women with a ratio of 1.5:1. RCC most commonly occurs between 6th and 7th decade of life. Initial treatment is most commonly either partial or complete removal of the affected kidney(s).
