First Demonstration of Erbium -Doped Waveguide Amplifier Enabled Multi-Tb/s (16x1.6T) Coherent Transmission

Résumé

We demonstrate the first EDWA-enabled Terabit-class coherent optical communication with 1.6-Tb/s net bit rate per channel and 16 -channel WDM transmission over 81 -km fiber, proving the potential of such on-chip amplification for future coherent applications.

Fiber-optic communication

Fiber-optic communication is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of infrared or visible light through an optical fiber. The light is a form of carrier wave that is modulated to carry information. Fiber is preferred over electrical cabling when high bandwidth, long distance, or immunity to electromagnetic interference is required. This type of communication can transmit voice, video, and telemetry through local area networks or across long distances.

Débit binaire

Le débit binaire est une mesure de la quantité de données numériques transmises par unité de temps. Selon ses définitions normatives, il s'exprime en bits par seconde (bit/s, b/s ou bps) ou un de ses multiples en employant les préfixes du Système international (SI) : kb/s (kilobits par seconde), Mb/s (mégabits par seconde) et ainsi de suite. Dans le domaine de l'informatique, le débit est parfois exprimé en octets par seconde. Un octet équivaut à 8 bits, nombre de bits correspondant aux premières et aux plus simples des machines, et permettant de transmettre un caractère alphanumérique.

Multiplexage en longueur d'onde

Le multiplexage en longueur d'onde, souvent appelé WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing en anglais), est une technique utilisée en communication optique qui permet d'augmenter le débit sur une fibre optique en faisant circuler plusieurs signaux de longueurs d'onde différentes sur une seule fibre, en les mélangeant à l'entrée à l'aide d'un multiplexeur (Mux) et en les séparant à la sortie au moyen d'un démultiplexeur (deMux). Il s'agit pour simplifier de faire passer plusieurs « couleurs » simultanément dans une fibre – ou le plus souvent une paire de fibres (émission / réception).
