Fundamental aspects of linear slow light systems

Abstract

In a linear slow light system the delaying process is necessarily inducing distortion for fundamental reasons, strictly bounding the maximum delay-bandwidth product to unity. Slowing the light does not directly enhance light-matter interaction, but is a corollary of the intensity enhancement by multiple interferences.

Light

Light or visible light is electromagnetic radiation that can be perceived by the human eye. Visible light is usually defined as having wavelengths in the range of 400–700 nanometres (nm), corresponding to frequencies of 750–420 terahertz, between the infrared (with longer wavelengths) and the ultraviolet (with shorter wavelengths). In physics, the term "light" may refer more broadly to electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength, whether visible or not. Speed of light

The speed of light in vacuum, commonly denoted c, is a universal physical constant that is exactly equal to ). Bandwidth-delay product

In data communications, the bandwidth-delay product is the product of a data link's capacity (in bits per second) and its round-trip delay time (in seconds). The result, an amount of data measured in bits (or bytes), is equivalent to the maximum amount of data on the network circuit at any given time, i.e., data that has been transmitted but not yet acknowledged. The bandwidth-delay product was originally proposed as a rule of thumb for sizing router buffers in conjunction with congestion avoidance algorithm random early detection (RED).
