Fundamental aspects of linear slow light systems

Résumé

In a linear slow light system the delaying process is necessarily inducing distortion for fundamental reasons, strictly bounding the maximum delay-bandwidth product to unity. Slowing the light does not directly enhance light-matter interaction, but is a corollary of the intensity enhancement by multiple interferences.

Lumière

vignette|Rayons de lumière sortant des nuages. Dans son sens le plus habituel, la lumière est le phénomène à l'origine d'une sensation visuelle. La physique montre qu'il s'agit d'ondes électromagnétiques. Le spectre visible est la zone du spectre électromagnétique à laquelle est sensible l'espèce humaine ; il inclut la longueur d'onde où l'éclairement énergétique solaire est maximal à la surface de la Terre, par un effet d'adaptation à l'environnement. Vitesse de la lumière

La vitesse de la lumière dans le vide, habituellement notée c, est une constante physique de l'Univers qui est fondamentale dans plusieurs domaines de la physique. L'étude de la lumière et de sa vitesse remonte à l'Antiquité. Des philosophes et des scientifiques, en s'appuyant sur des arguments théoriques ou des observations, affirment que sa vitesse est infinie, alors que d'autres prétendent que non. Ole Rømer démontre en 1676 qu'elle est finie.

Bandwidth-delay product

In data communications, the bandwidth-delay product is the product of a data link's capacity (in bits per second) and its round-trip delay time (in seconds). The result, an amount of data measured in bits (or bytes), is equivalent to the maximum amount of data on the network circuit at any given time, i.e., data that has been transmitted but not yet acknowledged. The bandwidth-delay product was originally proposed as a rule of thumb for sizing router buffers in conjunction with congestion avoidance algorithm random early detection (RED).
