Résumé

Since its isolation by Esther Lederberg, phage lambda and its repressor protein CI have contributed substantially to the advancement of molecular biology. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Silpe et al. (2020) characterize the antirepressor Qtip of Vibrio phage VP882, which through CI sequestration triggers a lytic switch.

Phage lambda

Le phage lambda (Enterobacteria phage λ) est un virus bactériophage qui infecte la bactérie Escherichia coli. Ce bactériophage est un virus à ADN double brin, empaqueté dans une capside icosaédrique prolongée d'une queue et de fibrilles permettant l'ancrage sur la bactérie. Le phage lambda est sujet à deux cycles d'évolution possible : le cycle lytique qui conduit à la réplication rapide du virus et à la mort de la cellule hôte, en l'occurrence Escherichia coli, et le cycle lysogénique durant lequel il insère son génome de manière dormante dans celui de la bactérie et subit des réplications en même temps que le reste du génome bactérien.

Temperateness (virology)

In virology, temperate refers to the ability of some bacteriophages (notably coliphage λ) to display a lysogenic life cycle. Many (but not all) temperate phages can integrate their genomes into their host bacterium's chromosome, together becoming a lysogen as the phage genome becomes a prophage. A temperate phage is also able to undergo a productive, typically lytic life cycle, where the prophage is expressed, replicates the phage genome, and produces phage progeny, which then leave the bacterium.

Hedgehog

Hedgehog (en français : hérisson), est une protéine. Elle est présente chez les invertébrés (c'est une protéine de polarité segmentaire, impliquée dans le contrôle des patrons de développement embryonnaire). Il y a 3 gènes homologue du gène Hedgehog chez les vertébrés. La voie de signalisation de Hegdehog est complexe et fait intervenir plusieurs autres protéines. Patched et Wingless, notamment, sont aussi nécessaires à la segmentation et à la différenciation et permettent la régulation de l’expression de Hedgehog.
